The Election Commission has now stepped in regarding the issue of fake voter ID cards. The commission has sought a report from the concerned district administration on allegations of fake names being included in the voter list across the state. The state's Chief Electoral Officer, Divyendu Das, has requested a complete report on the matter. He stated that the report was sought after media reports surfaced regarding the incident.
The Election Commission has issued clear instructions that under no circumstances should fake or deceased voters' names be included in the voter list. He has also ordered appropriate action accordingly. Additionally, according to Election Commission sources, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of the state is set to hold a video conference with all Additional District Magistrates within the next 48 hours.
A few days ago, on February 12, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had alleged during a press conference in the Assembly that the BJP was bringing in outsiders to get their names added to the voter list, but she would never allow this to happen. On the other hand, BJP’s Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has accused the Trinamool Congress of including Rohingyas in the voter list as fake voters. Following this, reports of fake voters have emerged from one district after another.
Naturally, even before the summer heat rises, the political temperature in the state is heating up. The issue of fake voter ID cards has intensified political clashes, with both parties trading accusations. However, the Election Commission has not remained silent and has taken strict measures to resolve the matter as soon as possible.
According to sources within the Election Commission, a full report has been requested on how the incident occurred. The Commission has also made it clear that if the allegations are proven, it will not hesitate to take strict action against the responsible officials.
